Silvia W. Olarte


Silvia W. Olarte is a physician and educator. She holds a faculty appointment at New York Medical College, where she has directed their Psychoanalytic Institute for the past 5 years. She has lectured extensively in North and South America and in Europe on topics related to women's mental heath, psychodynamic psychiatry and its application to deprived populations, posttraumatic stress disorder, and cross cultural psychiatry.

 

After migrating from Argentina, she engaged in a long career as a clinical administrator of psychiatric services in the public and private sector in the City of New York. She was President of The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry and served in their board for 9 years. She was President of The Association of Women Psychiatrists and served on their board for 6 years. She served in and chaired multiple committees and councils at the national and local level of the American Psychiatric Association.  She has received multiple awards from prestigious medical organizations for outstanding clinical and administrative performance. She served on the board of Kabeyun, a boys’ camp in New Hampshire, for 9 years. Her cherished avocation is to write poetry.
